Andorra Caribou It's like the late 60s got in a time machine, jumped forward 40 years, then forgot it was the late 60s and made a really good record. Or it could be like sunshine. Either way, it's Canadian. Are you surprised? |

 | Jay-Z American Gangster By revisiting his life on the streets over a set of heavy, moody beats, American Gangster is Jay-Z’s grittiest album since his debut.
| | Ween La Cucaracha Ten years ago, Ween released one of the most important albums of the 1990s. Nowadays, Ween is just, well, Ween.
| | Radiohead In Rainbows Benefiting from an immaculate sense of balance and restraint, In Rainbows is Radiohead’s most coherent batch of songs since 2000’s Kid A. It may not reproduce the highs of “There There” or “Pyramid Song” on the band’s last two records, Hail to the Thief and Amnesiac, but it excels in an area where those records were sorely lacking: focus.
| | Akron/Family Love is Simple Exciting and lively, the fusion of straightforward rock, tribal freak-outs and dense soundscapes makes it Akron/Family’s best release yet.
| | Iron and Wine The Shepherd's Dog Iron and Wine expands its sound, but manages to retain its romantic and intimate appeal.

Captain Webb vs. the English Channel Christmas Fuller Project Arkansas-hailing indie group Christmas Fuller Project's self-released, "time-travel-themed" debut album, The Philosophy of Time Travel, kicks off with the provocatively titled "Captain Webb vs. the English Channel".
After thirty seconds of a quasi-classical piano intro, "Captain Webb" introduces us to an underproduced Colin Meloy (Decemberists) soundalike that builds a nautical vibe. CFP weave tension through their second verse, both in the vocals and in the quickening then stopping backing guitar.
A guitar tremolo solo leads into a tempest of sound, with everything coming together to not only ease the tension but to invoke almost a stormy nautical image. Finally, the storm blows itself out on one last, final note, breathing a sigh of relief and giving a small sense of wonder towards the dense sound created during "Captain Webb"'s instrumental.
Unpolished? Sure, but impressive for a self-made debut nonetheless. Christmas Fuller Project knows it's showing its musical influences where everyone can clearly see them, but a band with this much pop craftsmanship to start out with should round into its own in no time. |

Phil's Top 10 Albums of 2007We were collectively too stupid and lazy to make a collaborative 2007 top albums list, so Phil stepped in and did a better job than we would have anyways. Enjoy!
| Overlooked folk gems of 2007The great, overlooked folk records from this year shows that organic studio music still exists.
